  • GMC chair apologises to doctors for ‘fear and anguish’ caused by Bawa-Garba case

    Michael Bramble's comment 15 Mar 2018 1:27pm

I have no desire to stay anonymous. As a retired medical director I spent many hours with distressed doctors agonising about adverse outcomes, many of which were not predictable. Bad practice or bad luck? Very rarely simple bad practice and virtually never in isolation. This death was almost predictable given all the factors (systemic failings) involved and so the GMC decision is the most appalling act of scapegoating I have witnessed. The GMC should be better than this and admit it made a mistake. As Nick Ross pointed out this hasn't cost a life but it has cost a good doctor her career. Time for an appeal and some GMC humility. I stand with all the other doctors doing their best with no hope of GMC support

  • Junior doctors to withdraw emergency care in escalation of action

    Michael Bramble's comment 24 Mar 2016 4:24pm

Just to be clear in 1975 the juniors did not stop emergency work (ask the BMA) I was spokesperson for over 200 junior doctors in NE England where they covered emergencies as normal. Mortality went down in the strike so I agree the evidence is that patients will be safe. However who believes that one death will not be spun by the government and press in order to vilify the juniors? That's the world we live in - please don't play into their hands just make the withdrawal of routine work for longer periods. Believe me it worked in 1975 and the public remained on our side (Vital)

Withdrawing emergency cover is extremely risky and unnecessary. In 1975 the juniors didn't withdraw emergency cover but still won because of increasing waiting lists which are very bad news for the government. Stick to plan A. Alienating the public and juniors losing their support is Hunt's strategy
