Holy Smoke Batman
Back in the day. c2001...I went to a GP training weekend at Cumberland Lodge where I came face to face with a bunch of college luvvies. It was traumatic. I realised my error in becoming a GP. It would have been like realising the war effort against global fascism was in the total control of the cast if "It aint half hot mum".
Happy to answer your questions Maverick
1. Weather in Australia is very excellent and outside the cities the population density is much less
2. There is Der for service...but close to 90% of consultations are handed out for free and the doctor receives the standard consult fee from the Government. Very controversially this rate has been frozen by all governments meaning income of GPs is inexorably decreasing
3. There is much less regulation of what you do and so a lot of loony fringe medicine is practiced by your colleagues (iv vitamin therapy springs to mind)
4. You can get high quality lab and imaging diagnostics within 24hr. I simply COULD NOT BELIEVE IT when a UK colleague says it takes two weeks for UK GP to get USS result....wtf!! How can you lot actually practice medicine
5. Doors to GP are closing really fast and there is a glut of home grown interns coming though
Here's the problem.
No one knows what the boundaries of "mental health issues " are
Endless awareness campaigns and "motherhood " statements from celebrities create a mushroom cloud of of mental health issues out there all seeking a mental health consultation.
If the mental health issue in question when looked at closely is simply normality and normal life experience then it cannot be treated
Does anyone give a toss that the population are referring themselves too much to GPs?
I don't think you have grasped a particular nuance of this. Mandatory Training in say Hand Washing divests the organisation against any future responsibility if you get sued for some infection control matter...they say but DrX completed and signed this mandatory training module
Under anonymity I would go way further.
The chemical imbalance theory has NO evidence for it despite 5 decades of search.
The antidepressant and latterly the antipsychotic prescribing hoax is the biggest medical scandal of my professional life.
Trouble is saying ANYTHING that is not 100% warm fuzzy and welcoming of "mental health issues" instantly makes you the killer of Bambi
So good luck Des
Can we have an end to the cliché "2 tier health service " I have been hearing it since the 1980s.
Food is essential
When I consult my hungry stomach on a Friday night, must I go to Macdonalds....no! I begin to survey the multi-tiers of my culinary options at home at supermarket takeaway restaurant
Two tier is good. Multitiered options even better. Anything else is COMMUNISM
While I am at it ... can someone attempt a practical workable definition of "junk food" which lazy journalists trot out as a term assuming everyone knows what is meant. No, I DON'T know what it means!!
Folks, you don't get it do you...
5000 12000 25000 new GPs ?
The real plan is have a cheaper alternative to GP across the board
80% of what GP now does can be done by a nurse now anyway. Admit it I dare you.
15 to 19% of the rest is Cardigan bulls**. Any serious 1% pathology gets diagnosed&managed by non GP anyway
To Jo Smith...we had higher and lower GP trainees for years. One group submitted themselves for MRCGP the other group just did the Summative Assessment thing. This pertained at least 1995 to 2005. Nobody cared less then.
Why is the UK creating MORE elected politicians....totally the best idea is to DISBAND more quango and shrink the number of politicians
PLEASE SOMEONE EXPLAIN...
When I were a lad GPs were the very acme of a tory demographic. Independent self-sufficient cocking a snook at colleagues toiling under the socialist yoke of the NHS.
When exactly did this change? I want answer to the nearest MONTH please
If you think socialism has anything to offer a high skilled professional...you are a massive mug (CUI ...Corbyn s useful idiots)
ADHD is not a disease. Fair enough if you and whichever MH worker gave you this label and you are happy to enter into this pact. But you may as well call being happy go lucky or egotistical or a bit flirty or a hundred other descriptors of human personality (see W Shakespeare ) a disease
Sorry...there needs to be an opinion ventured that it is all largely self-indulgence
Get to adult life and accept yourself...or don't. These labels are spurious
...and the trajectory of most mental health workers is: 1. Go into it feeling like complete martyr 2. Realise you can't do anything about s**t life syndrome see Smith point above 3. Play the overworked victim card 4. Go off sick 5. Become mental health patient yourself.
Sorry to sound cynical but seen it so many times!
Most professionals who work in mental health are absolute black belt masters of work avoidance IMHO.

UK Labour Party policy when last in power
massive stupidity, or they did it on purpose to ruin the lives of poor "natural labour" supporters ... in fact massive stupidity both ways
Went to Emergency Medicine conference...ICEM in Cape Town....world expert starts his talk thus:
" what is the definition of sepsis? The answer is ...at the moment no one really knows or can agree "
