Dame Lesley Southgate has a global reputation for her work in assessing the competence of clinicians, helping lay down the standards for all postgraduate assessment programmes in the UK.

She led much of the toughening of assessment methods at the GMC, with her work strongly influencing the development of revalidation.

She was also a former president of the RCGP.
