£2,000 from NHS for just a morning's work

Dr S Deo wonders if doctors are paid more than £170 for three hours' work for reducing their waiting lists (Letter, February 17).

He may be interested to know that a friend, a consultant anaesthetist at one of north London's teaching hospitals, was paid £2,000 for working on a Saturday morning as part of the NHS waiting list initiative.

I expect that the surgeon was paid similarly.
