25% of practices have closed lists

One in four of 119 practices contacted by Consumers Association researchers posing as new patients said its list was closed. The association said the results were 'disturbing' but warned forced allocations put strains on overstretched GPs.

Dr Brian Balmer, chair of Essex LMC and a GPC member, said: 'Practices close lists to control workload and give decent care to the patients they have got.'
