500 walk-in centres

The Government plans to open 500 walk-in centres and minor injury units as part of its drive to increase patient choice.

Emergency care tsar George Alberti said he wanted to see one centre per 100,000 population.

His comments came after 11 new NHS walk-in centres were unveiled for England this year, bringing the total to 64. There are a further 80 minor injury units.

Dr Alberti said the plans had no bearing on proposals to allow people to register with a practice close to their work as well as near home.
