As chair of the NHS Alliance, Dr Michael Dixon is one of the profession's key brokers between clinicians and managers, and has striven to forge closer relationships between the two.
A huge supporter of primary care, he has regularly vented his frustrations at the dominance of the acute sector, most recently over the shake-up of community health and the failure of Lord Darzi to consult with GPs.
Dr Dixon's other key interest is complementary medicine – he is director of the Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health.
