Our roundup of health news headlines on Monday 12 July.
Today is D-day for Andrew Lansley's grand plans for the NHS - and while the full details of the White Paper won't be revealed until 3.30pm this afternoon, the papers are already full of the pre-match buildup.
The Telegraph focuses on the greater powers that patients will be given to choose their consultants, as part of what the paper calls ‘the wholescale transfer of power from the NHS into the hands of patients'. (The Daily Digest isn't sure, but thinks they may actually mean ‘wholesale').
The Press Association, meanwhile, focuses on the new results-driven framework that the White Paper will bring in, with Mr Lansley due to ‘claim that 20,000 deaths from cancer and strokes could be avoided each year by making the NHS more accountable against "outcomes" such as survival rates.'
The Daily Mail's take, meanwhile, is that the plans could mean GPs end up opening longer at weekends.
And the BBC sticks to the implications for GP commissioning, albeit in layman's terms, reporting that ‘ministers want doctors to get together in groups to take charge of billions of pounds of funds for mental health, hospital and community services.
Away from the White Paper, the Daily Mail reports on a ‘jab that will halt the most deadly forms of cancer'. The injection, which is currently being tested on patients, helps prevent tumours from spreading throughout the body, and is thought to be effective against various types of breast, bowel, cervical, and pancreatic cancer.
