At the heart of general practice since 1960

Are we heading for e-bay style bidding for locums?

As he starts the hunt for summer locum positions, the GP Apprentice is musing on where general practice is heading, given the apocalyptic warnings from the LMCs conference.

1.2 Million people supported the recent BMA campaign to Support Your Surgery. You can't have missed the posters in your surgery showing the fate of Small shops, Post Offices and NHS dentist. Who knows if General Practice is really heading in that sad direction.

It seems a shame that little was heard about the petition being handed in and the cynical amongst us would wonder what influence the government has on out media.

The conference also urged GP's to support salaried doctors and consider offering more partnerships to prevent new GP's becoming cannon fodder for APMS or leaving to go to foreign lands like me.

In surgery, summer has brought the hoards looking for their supply of hay-fever medicine. They're often easy to spot with the red eyes and running noses as they head into the room.

They barely have time to utter a few words before a script for my favourite anti-histamine of the year and eye drops churns out from my printer.

I have been amazed at the price differences of the various potions around at the moment for the problem, not that the majority of my patients care though as they don't pay a penny.

For me though it is time to sell my body, well almost as I begin to seek locum work. As usual there are new hurdles such as a new criminal record check and the performers list to deal with.

Added to that there came the huge shock of quite how much my medical indemnity will be for the year ahead. My CV and a letter has gone out to 60 local practices and I eagerly check my e-mail for offers yet to come.

Having sold a lot on e-bay recently I wonder if a new eBay style bidding for locums could be the future. Highest bids, feedback ratings, payment via PayPal and unpaid bill disputes it's all there...
