Benefits of ezetimibe combination

Adding ezetimibe to existing atorvastatin treatment achieves greater reduction in LDL cholesterol than simply increasing the dose of atorvastatin alone, according to Canadian researchers.

A double blind study of 579 adult patients with hypercholesterolaemia who were already taking atorvastatin 40mg daily were given either ezetimibe 10mg or atorvastatin 80 mg daily for six weeks.

The atorvastatin plus ezetimibe combination reduced LDL cholesterol significantly more than daily high dose atorvastatin – 27% compared with 11%.

More patients on combination treatment had their LDL cholesterol level lowered to less than 2mmol/l, 74% compared with 32% on atorvastatin alone.
