Boots to open new in-store GP surgery

By Gareth Iacobucci

Boots has made its latest stride into primary care with the launch of its second in-store GP service.

The surgery in Halifax, set to open early in 2008, will provide a GP service at the high street chemist to offer patients easier access to their GP.

The service, which will see an existing practice in Halifax operating a branch surgery in the store, is Boots' second foray into this type of service, following the opening of the firm's first satellite surgery in Poole, Dorset earlier this year.

A spokesperson for Calderdale PCT said the service should begin in early January but was still subject to planning permission.

A spokesperson for Boots said the firm was ‘continuing with its discussions with the PCT, regarding the introduction of a doctors surgery to the Boots store in Halifax.'

With the Government stepping up its drive to increase private provision in primary care, Boots admitted to Pulse last month that providing care ‘has to remain a potential op-tion', although the firm insisted that their current position was ‘all about providing space for GPs.'
