Boring senior partner wants transfer

Dr Robbie Coull is condemning as 'bizarre' a decision to close the only GP practice on the Orkney isle of Shapinsay. The 300 inhabitants are planning a campaign of civil disobedience over the plans, which will mean their nearest surgery is in Kirkwall, a 25-minute boat ride away.

Dr Coull, who is working as a locum at the Elwickbank practice, said the trip was impossible in bad weather, which was when many urgent cases occurred. He said: 'What they're doing is leaving the island without cover. The island's population is growing and has been for a number of years. But young families particularly look for islands with local GPs.'
