Branch surgeries threat hits home

I refer to your news story 'GPs predict mass branch surgery closures' (March 10). I am singlehanded and run two branch surgeries in addition to my main surgery. They are both based in community centres. The proposed contract stipulates that where a branch surgery is held in a building that is used for other purposes then the criteria need not apply.

Continued funding would, of course, be at the discretion of the PCO and perhaps a case would have to be made for local circumstances.

We foresee potential difficulties in retaining funding for branches and have already notified the local councillors of the proposals in the new contract. Dr Phil Donnett, vice-chair of Cornwall and Scilly Isles LMC, might consider doing likewise as often patients and politicians seem to carry more weight than we GPs do!
