...'But it could have been so much worse'

The results of the contract review are 'far from ideal' but could have been much worse, Dr Hamish Meldrum has told GPs.

Dr Meldrum, GPC chair, said negotiations with NHS Employers were dominated by the Government's belief that GPs' pay had soared since the new contract.

Chancellor Gordon Brown had even insisted on a veto over the deal because 'over-delivery' of the original contract by GPs had lead to a GMS bill £1.5 billion higher than the Treasury had expected.

Dr Meldrum said the Government had wanted far greater 'efficiency savings' than the 8 per cent hailed by NHS Employers.

Dr Meldrum said: 'If I say I'm pleased, people will say I'm being conceited. If I say I'm pissed off, people will say I'm unrealistic. We're reasonably satisfied.'
