Cervarix wins UK HPV vaccine contract

The Department of Health has awarded the contract to provide the HPV vaccine to GSK, to supply their vaccine Cervarix.

The decision to choose a bivalent vaccine in preference to the quadrivalent alternative - Sanofi Pasteur MSD's Gardasil - which protects against cervical cancer and genital warts, disappointed health groups.

Lisa Power, Head of Policy at Terrence Higgins Trust, called the decision ‘short-sighted'.

She added: ‘The Department of Health is saving pennies to spend pounds later. It seems that the UK is fated to be not just the poor man of Europe but also the warty one.'
