At the heart of general practice since 1960

Child specialists plan would destroy GP role

The move to strip GPs of responsibility for paediatric care will be the thin end of the wedge ('GPs to lose lead role in paediatric care').

Next it will be psychiatry, then gynaecology and then we will be like our GP colleagues in Germany who don't do any of these things, and the gulf in standards shows up only too clearly when they come over here at weekends and try to do out-of-hours.

These proposals will herald the end of family practice. We must resist them and the dumbing-down of the GP role. We are generalists and proud to be so.

From Dr Peter Holden, Matlock, Derbyshire
