Choose and Book not ready

This is not the time for PCTs to order GPs to make all referrals through Choose and Book (News, 17 October).

Prolific evidence has been provided by Pulse to show that Choose and Book is not yet fit for purpose. Policy is at loggerheads with possibility. One development that would allow both policy and possibility to meet is full development of directly bookable appointments.

Recently I was asked by letter to refer one of my patients to a named consultant neurologist at a named hospital, but the hospital concerned didn't list the consultant neurologist names on Choose and Book, so I had to make a direct referral.

Choose and Book is out of gear and not ready to enable all referrals.
