GPs should refer cancer patients to consultant within 10 days

GPs should refer patients with suspected cancer to a consultant within 10 working days, the Welsh government has said.

The new target shortens the two week target for referral currently in force in England.

Health minister Mark Drakeford said if the NHS met this ‘interim milestone’ it would make hitting the overall target to treat cancer patients within 62 days more achievable.

Mr Drakeford said: ‘While the vast majority of urgent referrals are seen within the 62-day target, the NHS has struggled to meet the requirement to see 95% of all referrals within that time frame.

’Analysis of waiting times performance shows that if the first outpatient appointment takes place after 10 days, then the NHS is playing catch-up in terms of meeting the overall target.’

NHS Wales chief executive David Sissling will be writing to NHS organisations advising them to utilise this milestone as part of their approach to performance management.

  • At present GPs have t refer a patient suspected of having cancer within 24 hours.
The CONSULTANT must then see them within 2 weeks.
Yet another example of GPs being blamed for something outside their control.

  • blamed for something beyond our control again. Next it will be car breakdowns, water leaks in patients houses and when your on line shopping arrives late

  • pointless rubbish
main issue is even when patients get seen within 2/52 and they do
big delay in diagnostics mri colonsocopies etc.
the 2 week bit is the bit that actually works well!
one thing is clear here we GPs will get blamed for everything

  • Yes misleading wording here, of course we refer cancer patients within 10 days, usually on the same day. Not sure what they are trying to achieve with this story except more bad press for GPs..... So bored of this now

  • Tick....... I already do that

  • Our 2ww referrals are sent by fax the same day, usually within 2 hrs of seeing the patient. No GP waits 10 days to send a cancer referral I doubt any wait 10 hours.

  • 2 weeks = 10 working days. did the welsh govt miss something? or did they want to give GPs an extension during weeks that include public holidays?
