RCGP honours Jamie Oliver for his ‘innovative work on nutrition’

TV chef and restaurateur Jamie Oliver has received an honorary fellowship from the RCGP for his global campaign to promote healthier diets.

Mr Oliver was awarded the honour for ‘outstanding work toward the RCGP’s objectives’, including his campaign to tackle childhood obesity through changing the general public’s attitude to food and healthier school lunches.

The inclusion of weight management into the QOF, alongside added responsibility for the UK’s growing obesity problem have divided the profession, but on accepting his award Mr Oliver announced that ‘better food education is a doctor’s best friend.’

Chair Dr Clare Gerada said: ‘GPs have a huge role to play in encouraging our patients to eat healthier so that they keep well and enjoy their lives to the full.

‘We are delighted to welcome Jamie to the College and hope that we can work together to promote healthier lifestyle choices for people right across the UK.’

Mr Oliver said: ‘To be recognised by the Royal College of GPs is very special and it gives me and my team even more of an incentive to carry on the work of the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation.’
