GPs to provide online ‘MOT’ to male patients through new app

An online service allowing patients to talk to their GPs about their health concerns via a computer, tablet or smartphone is being trialled by a charity devoted to improving men’s health.

Men’s Health Forum is testing the free ‘Man MOT’ system with GPs in Haringey, north London, and has said it may encourage much wider use if it proves successful.

The system offers male patients an online chat with a GP about any concerns they have about their health on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays between 6pm and 9pm by going onto the Men’s Health Forum website.

It is funded by the Department of Health, and the GPs are paid for their time, a spokesperson said.

The Men’s Health Forum website says: ‘All the health professional needs is a computer. There is no surgery, no missed appointments, and no needless visits to A&E. It’s so much easier for everyone.’

Project manager Jim Pollard said: ‘We know that men don’t go to see their GP whereas women do. The aim is to make it as easy as possible for men to get help, and we want to show that this is a cost effective way of reaching harder to get men.’
