Contract has sent GP echo referrals soaring

GPs are refusing to counter-sign cremation forms in protest at the GMC's decision to charge six GPs who blew the whistle on Harold Shipman.

The GMC confirmed in August it was bringing misconduct charges against the Hyde GPs who between them countersigned the cremation certificates of 214 of Shipman's patients.

Now practices and undertakers in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire are struggling to find a GP prepared to sign part two cremation forms, the LMC has reported.

LMC secretary Dr Paul Roblin said GPs could be 'downing tools' out of 'understandable' anger at the GMC but urged them to reconsider: 'Distressed relatives will be upset in being handled in that way and it wouldn't do much for the reputation of GPs.'

GPC negotiator Dr Laurence Buckman said some GPs had concluded the risk in signing the forms was too great.
