Contract ‘Yes’ vote was spun

To Dr Steve Harris, I say hear, hear! The 'Yes' vote was to the question: ‘Should we negotiate to change what's on offer?'

(Letters: This contract is not what we voted for)

The implication was that we didn't accept the offer, and wanted the BMA to negotiate further.

Unfortunately, the BMA spun the result and suggested we had voted to accept the contract, which was not true. Even worse was that not all GPs received polling cards. It made it look very much like the vote had been rigged.

This is why there was so much support for a new union, and for the fledgling Medical Practitioners' Union. And it is why the BMA lost the trust of so many doctors.
