COPD inhaled steroid hope

From Dr Chris Nancollas

Yorkley, Gloucestershire

I am increasingly alarmed by

the attitude of Dr Phil Peverley.

Not content with implying that nursing homes are full of old people with nothing much to look forward to (18 June), he is now suggesting we regard smokers as adult human beings who are able to make individual lifestyle choices (12 November).

This is completely against the trend of modern evidence-based thinking, and if he is in doubt he should revisit clause 4 of the

New Labour Guide to the

Hippocratic Oath, which states: 'You shall regard all patients as equal, unless they are smokers, drinkers, sunbathers, or eaters of fried breakfasts, who you will

see as lying, cheating, verminous scum; and you will smite them with Population Manager until their filthy habits are extinguished.'

As he waits for his inevitable appearance before the elders of

the tribe, perhaps he can console himself with the Prayer

of St Hewitt:

Thy brother smileth,

Find out why,

And stop it immediately.
