Cut the waste on fitness to work

I agree wholeheartedly with Dr George Moncrieff (Letters, 21 September). The Med 3 has become a scandal. But in my experience the 'factual report' such as the IB 113 is a complete waste of time and effort.

The form takes a long time to fill out if it is to have any meaning. Historically it has no fee attached to it.

The whole scheme is being flaunted by many employers asking for certification in the first week. This is even coming from NHS employers.

The worst problem came this week. I was sent an IB 113 for a patient who had been on incapacity benefit for two years. As you will recall we do not issue Med 3 after 28 weeks as Government departments take over at that time.

This patient had only just registered with my practice and as usual the notes are taking a long time to come through. I have no idea why the patient was signed off, and therefore cannot give a prognosis.

Let us have some meaningful discussions and get rid of all of this wasteful procedure.

From Dr Stephen Fox, Leigh, Lancashire
