Depression is a symptom cluster

From Dr Chris Manning

Chief executive, Primhe

(Primary Care Mental Health and Education)

Dr Dylan Murphy is reported as saying that depression is 'nebulous' (News, 13 July).

While I think that depression is not a single disease entity but a symptom cluster, I also have personal experience of the physicality of a process that I am at ease with terming an illness.

It certainly wasn't 'nebulous' and if the experience could be delivered to people who are sceptical either of its reality or its ravaging effects, then I would willingly offer it to them as a five-minute taster.

And to Dr Helen Joesbury quoted in the panel for that story ('so it's Prozac as usual for many of them') I would respectfully offer the advice to acquire some CBT skills that would assist her in the many consultations where mental health problems are present.
