DIY toolkit helps GPs audit out-of-hours service quality
The RCGP has produced a toolkit for the Department of Health to enable GPs and other health professionals providing out-of-hours services to audit the quality of their care so they can improve it.
Health minister Andy Burnham said the Out-of-Hours Clinical Audit Toolkit will help professionals assess the quality of their advice and speed of response during phones calls and face-to-face consultations.
The GP or other provider can go through tick-box exercises to gauge their ability to filter out patients needing emergency care for immediate treatment, provide self-help advice and take accurate records of calls, said Mr Burnham.
He added: 'We are aware that some areas face more challenges than others, including in very rural and very urban areas, and we are determined to ensure that out-of-hours services in every area match the standards of the best.'The audit toolkit is at www.rcgp.org.uk.
