GPs buried under trusts' workload dump

Don't blame Choose & Book

Your article, 'Paper referrals returned as hospitals battle wait target' (News, 24 August), unfairly blamed Choose and Book as 'stopping GPs referring patients to popular hospitals'. Rather than acting as a barrier to preferred referral pathways, Choose and Book is simply

offering transparency into the capacity issues that we know exist within the NHS. In itself, Choose and Book does not stop referrals being made.

Choose and Book is a flexible IT tool, which trusts implement in line with local processes and procedures. If trusts choose not to publish appointment slots in Choose and Book beyond 13 weeks, then this is a trust decision, not a fault of the Choose and Book IT system.
