Don't blame GPs for referral delays

From Dr David Church, Machynlleth

Regarding your article on referrals that the hospital failed to check up on (News, 3 December), I disagree strongly with the MDU that the GP could be held responsible.

Once I have referred a patient to another doctor in the NHS, that doctor is responsible for any delay he causes by action or negligence.

There is no way I could be expected to know whether or what action consultants take on X-ray results unless they or the patient tell me.

So it is unreasonable to blame GPs.
