Employers must do more to get sick workers back

I would have to disagree partially with Dr Sayeed Khan, chief medical officer to the Engineering Employers Federation (May 19). My experience on the whole is that employers are not active enough in assessing their employees' illness (I'm talking mainly about back pain) nor in offering their employees alternative work.

Having worked in an alternative system where getting people back to work is a job in itself (New South Wales), I think a lot more can be done if employers are more active at an earlier stage.
