End of the line for Choose and Book DES

Financial incentives for Choose and Book seem almost certain to end in March, after a warning from the GPC that the Choice and Booking Directed Enhanced Service (DES) will not be renewed.

Negotiators said in their latest bulletin ‘the DES in England is expected to stop on 31 March 2008.'

‘In the absence of funding, practices will wish to consider whether they wish to continue using the Choose and Book system.'

The warning follows clear signals from Connecting for Health that in future demand from patients will replace financial incentives.

Dr Paul Cundy, chair of the joint RCGP and GPC IT committee, said: ‘As far as we know there is no DES for next year. Choose and Book will sink or swim on its own merits.'
