Expert patients the way forward

I most certainly agree with the views of Dr Anita Campbell (News, May 10) on the expert patient programme.

Chronic disease management with 'experts' will relieve pressure on practice nurses but it is the self-limiting illnesses like upper respiratory infections, common cold, diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms which have been present for less than 24 hours, that take up a huge percentage of our same-day appointments.

How do we educate patients about self-care when around 75 per cent of those who attend the surgery for consultations do not pay a prescription charge?
