Family history is key to one in 10 consultations

Family history is 'highly relevant' in one in 10 GP consultations, suggests research by Dr Ian Hopkinson.

Half of such cases relate to coronary heart disease risk, warns Dr Hopkinson,

a GP in north London who works for the London IDEAS Genetics Knowledge Park one of six Government-funded genetic research centres.

Dr Hopkinson, senior lecturer in primary care genetic medicine at University College London, studied the genetic histories of 2,000 patients. He will present the results at a genetics conference in London later this month.
