Fears for GPs in the Orkneys

Dr Garry Mearns fears the Orkney Islands could lose 18 of its 27 GPs under the contract because new funding methods would bring massive losses.

The inducement system currently keeps practices on the islands afloat by guaranteeing 82 per cent of average GP income, but this would disappear.

Dr Mearns, a GP on Rousay, said the Carr-Hill formula would bring a 45 per cent drop in income and basing funding on Red Book earnings would also lead to huge losses because practices have small list sizes.

'Carr-Hill would be a disaster for us. And if they are going to base it on the Red Book that will not help small practices at all,' he added.
