Fears over opiate controls

I read your story about the new regulations on controlled drugs (News, 11 January).

My sister is a physician practising in Germany, where there is a reluctance to use adequate doses of opiates in terminal care, because Nazi euthanasia of 'worthless life' is still a sensitive issue there.

What a pity it would be if Shipman's legacy were for us to end up in the same situation.
