At the heart of general practice since 1960

Five true champions of general practice in 2010

Who were the figures that truly represented the best of the profession this year?

Who were the figures that truly represented the best of the profession this year?

1. Dr Clare Gerada

The new RCGP chair wasted no time stamping her mark on college policy, launching a withering attack on elements of the Government's white paper in her first interview with Pulse after taking over the hotseat from Professor Steve Field. A name no doubt high on Andrew Lansley's list of people to watch in 2011.

2. Dr Andrew Wright

Generated national headlines and received ample plaudits from his peers after challenging then Prime Minister Gordon Brown to his face on Labour's pledge for a one-week wait for cancer diagnostics, during the PM's visit to his practice in Leeds.

3. Dr Barrie Walker

The Cumbrian GP bravely attended to the wounded and was forced to identify the body of a person he knew in the street in his home town of Seascale, following the horrific shooting rampage that saw 12 people shot dead by gunman Derrick Bird.

4. Professor Trisha Greenhalgh

In an age when reports commissioned by Government departments all too often find exactly what the department wanted them to, GP Professor Greenhalgh came up with more than a few home truths about the flaws in the Summary Care Record.

5. Silver Fox

His true identity may forever remain a mystery, but the person known to Pulse only as Silver Fox secured his place here after leaking documents showing patients had been placed at risk of ‘significant harm' by a series of failings in an out-of-hours system spearheaded by NHS Direct.
