Flu surges in children

The Public Health Laboratory Service has received the first reports this winter of outbreaks of influenza-like illness.

Three outbreaks were reported in schools in the south of England during the week ending February 2 and influenza B was confirmed in each. Additional reports have been received in schools in the North.

The PHLS said GP consultation rates for flu-like illness were rising in the five-to-14 age group.

Latest figures from the RCGP Birmingham research unit show the overall number of GP consultations for flu-like illness are running at 26 per 100,000, which it said was commonplace during winter.
