Fresh alert over Choose and Book security

By Steve Nowottny

A fresh security flaw in the Choose and Book system means patient records could have been accessed by users without an NHS smartcard, Connecting for Health admitted this week.

A GP in Essex alerted IT bosses after he discovered he could access the system without inserting his smartcard into a smartcard reader.

A spokesman for Connecting for Health said the incident had occurred because of ‘a local hardware fault combined with recommended security procedures not being followed.'

‘It caused no breach of patient confidentiality and is being thoroughly investigated to ensure that this cannot happen again,' he said.
