GMC: no election as council member terms extended

From Finlay Scott, chief executive, GMC

The council of the GMC has

19 medical members elected by the profession. Their terms

of office were due to end on

30 June 2007.

By order, the privy council has extended the terms of office of all current elected medical members.

These terms are now scheduled to run until

31 December 2008. This follows the recommendations laid

out in the white paper

Trust, Assurance and Safety – The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century, published on 21 February 2007. It is hoped this will provide a period of stability during what will be a time of change. The relevant order will come into force on 10 April 2007.

As the terms of office

will not now expire on

30 June 2007, the election of medical members, which would otherwise have taken place in 2007, will not now be required.
