Government sets date for abolition of CHCs

Community Health Councils will be abolished on September 1 this year, the Department of Health has announced. In a Commons statement, Health Minister David Lammy said the councils' powers would be transferred to patient forums being set up by the Commission for Patient and Public Involvement in Health and to new overview and scrutiny committees.

The Association of Community Health Councils for England and Wales said patients would be without representation for six months because forums for PCTs would not be set up until April 2004.
