GP attacked by baseball bat thugs

Dr Sandra Elliott has been attacked by thugs wielding a baseball bat as she ended an out-of-hours shift. The assault took place as she left the out-of-hours centre in Craigavon, County Armagh, at midnight.

'I was driving when they ran towards the car with a baseball bat and as I put it into reverse they hurled a brick after me,' she said. 'I didn't even look behind me and they kept running towards me as I reversed.' Colleagues alerted the police and the attackers were scared off.

Dr Elliott, a GP in Omagh, suspected the two men wanted her drugs bag as well as to steal the car as its personalised numberplate would have alerted them she was a doctor.

'To say I'm traumatised is an understatement. I saw my life flash in front of me,' she said. 'The centre should never have been put in that area. It's governed by thugs who deal drugs.'
