GP backs Reid and advises against smoking 'lectures'

Dr David Carvel sympathises with Health Secretary John Reid's comments that smoking is the 'only enjoyment' available to some people on low incomes.

Dr Carvel, a GP in Biggar, Lanarkshire, said GPs had to be careful of 'lecturing' patients to give up.

'Smoking is obviously bad for your health, but sometimes GPs can be guilty of lecturing and not taking into account personal situations,' he said.

'Some people have such miserable lives, and for some it's the only pleasure they have. We should be trying to get people to stop smoking as far as possible, but it's sometimes too simplistic to just say drink less and smoke less, although that is the ideal.'
