GP berates Reid in TV debate

Dr Kailash Chand has berated John Reid over the 48-hour access target in a television debate.

GPC member Dr Chand told the Health Secretary the NHS should be renamed and called the 'Target Delivering Organisation' during the Jonathan Dimbleby Show. He added it was pointless for GPs to see patients within 48 hours if there were delays in the rest of the system.

Dr Chand, a GP in Ashton under Lyne, said: 'All these targets are not a quality measure. They are quite meaningless and have produced some very perverted behaviour. Patients want quality care.'

Mr Reid said the NHS belonged to patients and fast access was a priority.
