GP condemns NHS Direct advice

Dr Patricia Critchley has condemned NHS Direct after it told a patient who wanted advice on pregnancy testing to see a GP within one hour.

Dr Critchley, a GP in south London and a member of South East London Doctors on Call, said the patient had told NHS Direct her period was four days late. The helpline's referral fax to the co-op then said 'this patient needs to contact a doctor within one hour'.

Dr Critchley said: 'We had to deal with this call and we were extremely busy with emergency calls.

'I don't really see the point of NHS Direct. I thought the point of it was to divert non-urgent calls but the people who work for it do not seem to have any confidence. They always say contact your doctor.'
