GPs buried under trusts' workload dump

GP fears for terminal care

Dr Catherine Neden fears GPs will become deskilled in palliative care because of its omission from the new contract. Her warning comes after her project covering 320 patients in Kent increased the proportion of patients with a palliative care management plan from 58 to 86 per cent in a year.

Some 80 per cent of patients on opioids are now reviewed at least monthly up from 57 per cent. The proportion with an out-of-hours 'handover sheet' has also more than doubled. Dr Neden, a GP in Ramsgate, said: 'Patients in their final year of life will see their GP the majority of the time.'
