GP helps smokers choose how to quit

Dr Richard Thomas has produced a tool to help smokers choose how to quit.

Dr Thomas, a GP in Swansea, was part of a team from the University of Swansea commissioned by the Welsh Assembly to develop the decision aid due to be launched next month.

The 16-page booklet, spelling out the pros and cons of various options, from willpower to Zyban, will be distributed to GP surgeries and PCOs across Wales.

Dr Thomas, a clinical research fellow at the university, said the aid was more useful than existing smoking cessation booklets that failed to help patients choose between treatments.
