GP hits out at £1m out-of-hours deal

Dr Eric Rose has condemned a PCT for awarding an out-of-hours contract to a commercial deputising service which forces GPs to either work shifts or lose their out-of-hours development money.

He accused Herefordshire PCT of acting prematurely in awarding the £1 million contract to Primecare because trusts have not yet assumed responsibility for commissioning out-of-hours services.

Dr Rose, GPC member for Berkshire and Buckinghamshire and a GP in Milton Keynes, said: 'I think this PCT is overstepping its powers. It has no power to organise out-of-hours care. That money should be paid to GPs.'
