GP lands award for 600-mile sea rescue

Dr Brian Michie has been awarded the Chief Coastguard's Commendation for his part in a record-breaking helicopter rescue mission last year.

Dr Michie, a GP in Stornoway in the Western Isles, flew 600 miles with the local helicopter crew to airlift a badly-injured fisherman from a Spanish trawler in the mid-Atlantic.

'I was proud to be part of the crew that went to the extreme limits of the endurance of a helicopter,' Dr Michie said.
