GP maternity locum cover under threat

The National Programme for IT has promised GPs they will be compensated if they lose data when changing their IT system and are left unable to earn quality points.

A spokeswoman for NPfIT said if a practice lost data during a move to one of the new systems Lorenzo or Carecast its contracts with local service providers would provide for claims for lost revenue.

She added: 'It is important to note that local service providers are not responsible for the quality of data transferred from existing systems.'

Dr Gillian Braunold, dep-uty chair of the GPC IT sub-committee, welcomed protection of GPs' income, but said lost data also carried implications for patient safety.

'There are other liabilities which I don't believe have been sorted,' she said.
