GP tackles crisis in public health

Professor Chris Drinkwater is to lead a Government taskforce that will aim to identify how GPs can help stem the rising tide of obesity, sexually transmitted infections and smoking.

A GP and professor of primary care development at the University of Northumbria, he will look to the new contract as a major lever to address public health issues.

Professor Drinkwater, also NHS Alliance public health lead, said: 'Practices could choose to provide health promotion and prevention as enhanced services. At the moment the focus is on improving access and dealing with demand so GPs don't have time to lift their heads above water and think about prevention.'
