GP takes fight to top

Suffolk GP Dr John Havard has launched a national campaign to save a pioneering 'one-stop' health shop.

Saxmundham Health provides a range of services, including a GP surgery, children's centre, ambulance station and dentist's surgery. But despite a £267,000 grant for an NHS day nursery from the strategic health authority, the project has been thrown into doubt by financial crisis at Suffolk Coastal PCT, which is unable to earmark funds for new investment.

Dr Havard, a GP at the one-stop shop, is desperate to continue development with a birthing unit, out-of-hours service and diagnostic and treatment centre. He has written to Prime Minister Tony Blair and Health Secretary John Reid, and says without more NHS cash 'this enlightened project will wither on the vine'.
